Angel Campey is a multi-award winning South African comedian, radio presenter and comedy screenwriter. Now the host of the popular afternoon drive show on Smile FM, ‘The Joyride with Angel Campey’ she has an extensive comedy career that started in 2011 on the infamous underground comedy club circuit of Long Street, Cape Town.
Born in a government hospital in Durban, at a very young age, she then bumbled her way aimlessly through life until she tripped and fell into Comedy, and everything made sense. She obtained an Honours in Film, Media and Visual Studies from UCT and taught English in South Korea before finding the microphone and vindicating herself from all those teachers who told her she spoke too much in school.
Internationally, Angel’s headlined in top comedy clubs around New York City, performed in Montreal, Canada during the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival and been invited to tour to Lagos, Nigeria as well as Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya performing alongside some of Africa’s comedy megastars to sold out crowds.
Campey has two critically acclaimed, self-written comedy specials under her belt, her debut was directed by Nik Rabinowitz and titled ‘Yes, Really Angel’ and her sold out smash hit, ‘Devil’s Advocate‘ which toured from the National Arts Festival to the Baxter Theatre. A writer on the double international Emmy Award Nominated ‘ZAnews: Puppet Nation’ for over 4 years, Campey garnered multiple Screenwriter’s Guild Muse awards for her script-writing work as well as the 2018 SAFTA for best TV comedy writing.
